Ai Weiwei takes Berlin university post

The dissident Chinese artist and political activist has reportedly taken the position at the Berlin University of the Arts, despite it remaining unclear as to when he will be allowed to leave China following his arrest earlier this year.

The 54-year-old – whose Sunflower Seeds piece was installed at the Tate Modern late last year – has been an outspoken critic of China's ruling Communist Party.

Earlier this year he was arrested at Beijing airport and detained for 81 days, reportedly for "economic crimes" relating to tax evasion, before being released on bail last month.

He was also told by the Chinese foreign ministry that he was forbidden from leaving Beijing without permission, casting doubt over him taking up a teaching post in Germany.

However, university president Martin Rennert confirmed that Ai had given a "positive signal" regarding his ability to begin the role in the near future.

Ai had previously intimated that he would be interested in relocating to Berlin, announcing plans in March to open a studio in the German capital as his European base.
